Week 12 - Hard Surface Modelling
Week 12 - Hard Surface Modelling
What Have I Learned This Week?
This week we were tasked at creating a Hard Surface Model of a weapon, using Smooth Preview and supporting edge loops accordingly to create a sharp hard edge model.
For my model, I made Red Death from Destiny. To make the shape I used a blueprint and cutting tool on a flat plane and created edge loops from the vertices accordingly. after removing the holes I extruded the shape to its thickness. This was an issue however as I wanted to extrude the shapes of the model on both sides. I removed half of the model and worked on the one side, as I would mirror the other side when I was finished. The Thickness of the model and the rounded barrel was made by manipulating the groups of vertices with scaling tools.
Using presets in AIStandardSurface had allowed me to get the correct textures on the model this time round.

One Major issue that resulted from my model was the smoothing tool. This was due to the topology. Because I had been mirroring and deleting a lot of the model, a lot of Ngons were being created on the inside of the model, as well as many duplicating edges and faces that needed to sorted and wasted a lot of time. Fixing all of this messed around with the topology and made it difficult to use bevel or create a lot of supporting edge loops without creating a lot of Ngons that would take a lot of time to clean up.
Although the results were okay, I'm still not very happy with the model. For next week I'm going to give the weapon another go, this time dividing the model into separate meshes cus as the body, trigger, knife and more so that I can get much cleaner topology rather than keeping it all to one mesh. This would then allow me to get a better hard surface model as supporting edge loops and bevelling would be manageable.
