 How can 3D Modelling Be Used For Concept Art


In Modern Video Game production, It has become increasingly Important for 2D Concept Artists to become equipped to simple 3D Modelling Programmes like Maya to create rough outlines of an environment or weapon model. In production, It's very common for a lot of disagreements with how a 3D render of a 2D concept image has an outcome, due to issues such as a layout of an environment or how the 2D environment does not look as good to the Concept Art from a different perspective of the 3D environment. 2D media is essential for creating a good starting point for a concept or idea, but It's truly the 3D department that figures out how the designs will be implemented 'In-game'. 

One Method 3D can be used for Concept Art is known as a 'Paint Over'. To get a 'Paint Over' the artist will create a 3D render of the concept idea known as 'White Boxing' using very simple low Poly Polygons to create a rough outline of how the Environment/Weapon etc will look. This as a method is great because It can allow 2D artists to build a concept up with the game engine in mind, and the concept artist can be happier with how assets and ideas will look from different angles and perspectives. 
When a 2D artist is happy with how the 3D models look he can begin to create a render, which will act as an image that the 2D artist can begin to 'Paint Over'. The Artist can begin to work 2D sketches and drawings over the image to build ideas of how the 'In-game' polygons will be textured/stylised. The 'paint Over' will be easier for the 3D department to work with as they ow know the 2D concept artist is happy with the overall layout and can begin working textures into the games engine. This method is widely used as it creates fewer problems and disagreements between 2D and 3D departments with how assets look within the games engine and can help reduce development time.
